Since the first case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) was encountered in Japan in 2001, the country quickly responded with a change from passive to active surveillance. The response has not been a smooth one, though, and news media have contributed to opening the public’s eyes to inadequate behavior from government sources responsible for monitoring and protecting the health of consumers. The resultant information“gap” has served to augment the typical Japanese perceptions of risk assessment, as assessed in surveys from 2003 to 2005. Such false beliefs have caused consumers to call for 100% testing of animals for BSE despite accepted scientific standards which do not support such comprehensive and costly surveillance. A bloom of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense was observed for the first time in Thau iagoon between November and December 1998. Maximum cell concentrations detected in shellfish farming areas (85 000 Cells/1) were high enough to make mussels and clams unsuitable for human consumption (max. 850 ug. STX eq.100 g'1) while toxic levels in oysters did not exceed, or even reach, the international public health threshold established for PSP toxins. The oyster culture basin of Marennes - Oléron is characterized by the tastiness of its oysters and the good quality of its waters, and thus of its shellfish. On that account, the quasi-totality of the production areas are ranked A for non-burrowing shellfishes, thus confirming the privileged character of the basin. This microbiological and chemical quality contributing to the reputation of the basin's shellfish farms needs to be preserved. En Méditerranée, des campagnes de surveillance sont mises en œuvre tous les 3 ans depuis 2006 pour répondre aux objectifs de surveillance des eaux côtières et de transition. Dans le cadre de la surveillance du milieu marin du site électronucléaire de Penly (Seine-Maritime), le domaine benthique côtier de Dieppe à Criel-sur-Mer a fait l'objet en juin 2008 d'une prospection biomorphosédimentaire comme celles réalisées en 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000 et 2004.
